With one of the state’s best strike rates, combined with metropolitan class training facilities we’re looking forward to working with Matt in the New Year along with some new yearling purchases next year.
Matt is one of New South Wales promising up and coming trainers. He has been based in Canberra for over ten years after completing an Equine Business Management course at Sydney University. He then spent time working for top trainers Gai Waterhouse and John O’Shea.
Matt has enjoyed much success throughout his training career including winning his first stakes race in 2011 with Lebrechaun in the Canberra National Sprint. In 2012 he won the Canterbury Classic with Unanimously and more recently enjoyed great success with Fellswoop.
Matt boasts one of the best winning strikes rates in New South Wales/ACT and places his horses particularly well especially in his local region where he is dominant.
He has a young family in Canberra and enjoys having a small boutique stable, which allows him to have an intimate knowledge of every horse and ensure a high attention to detail. His stables at Thoroughbred Park have 25 boxes with double yards, a walking machine, horse roll and heated swimming pool. He now also has a beach stable at Moruya which is a great asset.
Matt often rides trackwork, a quality he feels is an important first-hand indication on how a horse is travelling throughout their preparation. His stables are also beneficial to horses that appreciate a more quiet and relaxed environment.
With the recent announcement of prizemoney increases in the Country/Provinicial areas along with the addition of the TAB Highway Handicaps held every Saturday in the city and the Country Championships held over the Autumn Carnival- there has never been a better time to have horses trained in a country region.
